SPECIAL PROGRAMS
SATCHEL PAIGE: Long Rifle - A One-Man Play
Tuesday, May 22
7:00 PM
Whitehall Community Room
Meet Leroy 'Satchel' Paige, one of America's greatest baseball players, as he comes to life in this FREE, one-man theatrical production.
Written and performed by Cedric Liqueur, former actor with London's Royal Shakespeare Company and winner of the President's Memorial Certificate, you'll experience the life of this great American baseball player based on information obtained first-hand from Paige's family. Mr. Liqueur, an independent playwright, has written and performed many historical biographies for theatres, colleges and libraries since 1997.
For the first half of the 20th century, the white professional baseball league did not allow African American players to join, which lead to the development of the Negro League. Pitcher Paige set the Negro League single season strikeout record in 1929 with 184 strikeouts, including the then-record of 17 in one game. Finally, at age 42, Paige entered the Major League as the oldest "rookie" when he signed with the Cleveland Indians. He was the first Negro league player inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame and is remembered as one of baseball's best pitchers.
Enjoy the intriguing story of Satchel Paige, learn how the events of this era influenced the Civil Rights Movement, and become part of living history!
Complimentary ballpark snacks will be served to registrants before the program. For ages: 12 (with adult) and up. FREE - Online registration is required.

eREADER INFORMATION
SPECIAL NOTE: The library has purchased iPads, a Kindle, and a Nook for patrons to explore in house. Stop by and experience the latest technology hands on!
Can’t find the eBook title you’re looking for? There’s a reason for that.

Sadly, unlike a regular person, a library cannot pay Amazon or Barnes & Noble for an eBook and then lend it out to people. We can buy a printed book from these companies, place it on the shelf, and lend it out--but digital content is being treated differently by the publishers and the companies who manage digital content licensing.
We very much want to offer these eBooks to patrons; however, the publishers' policies are preventing us from doing so. Please know that public libraries are committed to advocating for a change to these restrictive policies.
AT THE LIBRARY
